Sports physicist John Eric Goff will present "Great Science of Great Sports at the World Cup and Tour de France" at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, at Northern Michigan University. The talk will be held in room 2906 of the West Science Building. It is free and open to the public.

Goff is a professor at Lynchburg College in Virginia. He will discuss such topics as the differences, from a physics standpoint, between the soccer balls used in the 2014 Brazilian World Cup and the 2010 South African World Cup. He will also dive into the caloric output of a Tour de France bicyclist in terms of fast-food hamburgers. Goff's work relating to the physics of athletics has been highlighted by The Wall Street Journal, National Public Radio (NPR) and Scientific American.
