Media Advisory: World Instruments Created, Played by NMU Students

Monday 20, 2014

Northern Michigan University students in a world music class will display and demonstrate the hand-built instruments they were assigned to create based on various countries/cultures they have discussed in class. All 30 students will bring their instruments to the next session at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, in room 111 of the Thomas Fine Arts Building. Media are welcome to cover the demonstration.

Instructor Carrie Biolo says a Native American student is making her very first hand drum (her grandmother has always made those she's played, so she asked her grandmother for permission to make her own). Biolo also knows of one mbira (kalimba or thumb piano), which is played in Zimbabwe, but the other 28 handcrafted instruments will be a surprise. They will represent music from India, Ghana (Ewe), Indonesia, Zimbabwe and its Shona people and Native American culture.
