Effort Underway to Endow Trost Swimming Scholarship
MARQUETTE, Mich.— An effort is underway to endow a Don Trost Memorial Swimming Scholarship for athletes participating in the sport at Northern Michigan University. The goal is to raise the $25,000 minimum required to endow a scholarship over the next three years.
Trost was head coach of the NMU swimming and diving program from 1966-85. He led the team to five Division II National Championships and produced more All-Americans during his tenure than all other athletic programs combined. His achievements earned him induction into the NMU Sports Hall of Fame in 1991.
NMU will add men’s swimming and diving to complement the existing women’s team in fall 2015. NMU previously had a varsity men’s team under Trost’s leadership from 1966-80. It recorded some impressive achievements: three 6th place finishes in NCAA Division II; two NCAA Division II National Champions (divers John Mehki and Dwight Hoffman); and 41 All-Americans who had 151 All-America performances.
