NMU Pow Wow March 14

The 22nd annual “Learning to Walk Together” traditional pow wow will be held on Saturday, March 14, at Northern Michigan University’s Vandament Arena. Doors open to the public at 11 a.m., with two grand entries at noon and 6 p.m. NMU students are admitted free with ID. General admission tickets are $5

“Learning to Walk Together” is a means to promote cultural diversity within the community. The celebration begins with the grand entry and flag song, followed by the veteran’s song to honor male and female veterans. The event includes traditional pow wow dances and social pow wow dances, with artisan and vendor booths featuring craft items, reference materials and food.

Highlighted performances include Rodney Loonsfoot, head veteran; KBIC Honor Guard; WaziJaci, host drum; Tonia Jo Hall, head female dancer; Shane Mitchell, head male dancer; Bucko Teeple, master of ceremonies; Bobby Blackdeer, arena director; Sam Doyle, fire keeper; Four Thunders, invited drums; Little Horse, invited drums; Sturgeon Bay, invited drums; and Woodland Singers, invited drums.

A hand-drum contest and feast will be held at 4 p.m. at the Jacobetti Complex and is open to all attendees.
