Hands-on Summer Programs Offered at NMU

Friday 15, 2015

A variety of hands-on, project-based summer camps will be offered at Northern Michigan University’s Jacobetti Complex for students in grades 7-12. Students will be able to explore careers in cosmetology, welding, building technology, culinary arts, crime scene investigation, bicycle repair/maintenance and small engines.

Each camp will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on its respective date. The cost is $60 per session. The schedule of programs follows:

July 13: Cosmetology: the art of braiding, manicures and makeup. Welding: basic wire-feed welding, plasma cutting and making a nameplate to take home.

July 14: Building technology: learn the skills needed for building a trinket box to take home. Crime scene investigation: investigate a staged crime scene and learn how to dust for fingerprints, take pictures and examine for clues.

July 15: Culinary arts: learn cooking skills from NMU hospitality management professor Chris Kibit. Crime scene investigation: same as July 14.

July 16: Bicycle repair and maintenance: offered in conjunction with Revolutions; campers are encouraged to bring their bikes to class, where they will do tune-ups and make repairs. Small engines: learn the basic fundamentals of internal combustion engines and how to change oil, do a tune-up and maintain a lawn mower.

To register for a camp or for more information, contact NMU’s continuing education and workforce development department at 227-2103.
