MARQUETTE, Mich. — Northern Michigan University will serve as a host site for a videoconference titled “The Iran Nuclear Deal: Separating Fact from Fiction.” The event is free to the public and scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, in the Marquette/Nicolet Room of the University Center. The speakers will be Reza Marashi, first research director at the National Iranian American Council, and Mark Johnson, former U.S. ambassador and deputy inspector general of the U.S. Department of State. NMU political science faculty members will hold a panel discussion after the videoconference to further explore the topic and answer questions.

Marashi has worked in the Office of Iranian Affairs at the U.S. Department of State and the Institute for National Strategic Studies. He was onsite in Vienna observing the Iran nuclear talks. Johnson served as ambassador to Senegal and deputy chief of mission in Kuwait and Cairo, Egypt. He was the first American diplomat to return to the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait City after it was liberated in the Desert Storm campaign. Johnson also was involved with the Middle East peace process and the Iranian hostage crisis.
