NMU Quiz Bowl Team Wins Home Meet

Thursday 7, 2016

A Northern Michigan University Quiz Bowl team enjoyed its first undefeated run and took first place at NMU's first home tournament last weekend. NMU's team A topped competitors from Lawrence University and Michigan Tech. NMU senior Paul Flaminio also was the highest-scoring individual player.

"Having our first home tournament be the first tournament we went undefeated made it something to be incredibly proud of,” Flaminio said.

Lawrence teams A and B finished second and third, NMU team B earned 4th place, and Michigan Tech team B and A placed 5th and 6th, respectively. NMU's team A avenged an earlier loss to Lawrence at the sectional tournament two months ago.

"We had a rematch and our A team beat them in two nail-biters," said Michael Joy, NMU professor and Quiz Bowl adviser. "The game that won the tournament for our A team came down to literally the last question. Everyone played great and Paul Flaminio had the best tournament of his career. Our NMU quiz bowl team members are top-notch students who are passionate about learning all kinds of things. They were great hosts for the visiting teams and we're excited about being involved in the creation of a new regional circuit for collegiate quiz bowl competition."

Joy said the remaining three graduating seniors--Rachael Peters, Zoe Ryan and Millie Weber--finished up strong last weekend and will be missed next year.

"Among other contributions they've made, Rachael's been the team treasurer since 2011, Zoe knows something about everything from cranial nerves to Kierkegaard, and Millie's our resident classical music expert. I'm sad to see them leave, but very proud of everything they've accomplished."

Peters added, “This tournament and our win was an amazing way for me to finish my career with the NMU Quiz Bowl Team. It’s the first time we’ve ever had a team go undefeated and I’m so proud that I was able to be a part of it.”
