Northern Michigan University's DeVos Art Museum will present an exhibit that explores the ancient art form of cornhusk dolls to preserve traditional culture and history. "Elizabeth Doxtater: Art of Peace" will be on display Sept. 26-Dec. 9. An opening reception and artist talk is scheduled at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26. Admission is free. 

Doxtater is a Six Nations (Mohawk) artist. She was inspired to create this work after viewing iconic western paintings such as Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper and Mona Lisa. She began to wonder how she could visually represent and celebrate her own cultural history, which has been based on oral traditions. Doxtater invites viewers to consider their role in creating peace in the world.

The exhibit features more than 100 corn husk dolls in two displays: Peacemaker’s Journey and the First Council Fire (Encircles Everything). It is presented in collaboration with the Center for Native American Studies.

Museum hours are: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Wednesday and Friday; noon to 8 p.m. Thursday; and 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
