Northern Michigan University's Center for Native American Studies will honor Native American Heritage Month with several activities in November. All are free unless otherwise indicated.

The Native American Student Association's annual First Nations Food Taster will take place from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, in the Jacobetti Complex. Tickets may be purchased in advance at 112 Whitman Hall or 3001 Hedgecock. Prices are $5 for NMU students with ID, elders and veterans, or $12 for general admission. Tickets at the door are $7 and $15, respectively. The taster will offer a variety of dishes made from indigenous ingredients of the Great Lakes region. More details are available here. 

A “Walk Softly Moccasin-Making Workshop” with visiting Ojibwe artist Greg “biskakone” Johns is scheduled from 11 .m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5. Participants will make moccasins. Materials will be provided and space is limited. Register in person by 4 p.m. Nov. 2 in 112 Whitman Hall.           

A presentation titled "The Good Way of Life: An Anishinaabe Cultural Event and Experience" will be held from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, at Marquette Senior High School. This is an academic service learning project involving NMJ students.

From Nov. 13-19, the sixth annual “Rock Your Mocs”  encourages everyone to wear moccasins during their daily routine and, if posting on social media, to tag it with #RockYourMocs.

The film “Smoke Signals” will be shown at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15 in the Whitman Hall commons. The film will be followed with a discussion led by Shirley Brozzo of NMU's multicultural education and resource center. 

A “Gift of Water Beading” workshop led by visiting Oneida artist Karen Ann Hoffman will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18. Participants will make a canoe-shaped wall hanging in honor of the waters. Materials will be provided. Space is limited, so please register in person by 4 p.m. Nov. 15 at 112 Whitman Hall.

Woodland Sky Dance Company will perform at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, in Reynolds Recital Hall. It will be a free showcase of Native dances, songs and stories. For more detailed information, click here.
