Wednesday 7, 2016

Andre Stringer of Detroit will be the student speaker at Northern Michigan University’s mid-year commencement on Saturday, Dec. 10. Kyle Hantz of Marquette will be the student soloist at the ceremony. He will lead the singing of the university’s alma mater, “Hail Northern,” and the national anthem.

Stringer will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. He was president of the Black Student Union for three years, served as a student member on the President’s Committee on Diversity and worked as the student engagement and community outreach coordinator in the NMU Diversity and Inclusion Office. As a McNair Scholar, his research evaluated prejudicial attitudes using the “Lost Letter Technique.” He presented his research at the Black Doctoral Network Conference in Atlanta.

Stringer interned at the Lake Superior Youth and Family Center and at the Department of Veterans Affairs through the Washington Center. He participated in the pre-law undergraduate scholars program at the Chicago-Kent College of Law and served as president of the NMU Student Law Forum. He plans to continue his education in law school and aspires to become a corporate attorney.

“My time at NMU was the best four years of my life,” said Stringer, who was the first in his family to attend college. “I learned so much about myself and grew tremendously as a person, leader, scholar and student.”

In addition to achieving his degree in four years, Stringer completed the NMU Student Leader Fellowship Program and the Superior Edge. He was a student ambassador with NMU Admissions, a resident assistant in Hunt Hall and a men’s club lacrosse player.

Hantz is a music education major, with a vocal/choral concentration.  He has been active in department choral ensembles, including the University Choir, Arts Chorale, and Lake Effect show choir. With his course work completed, Hantz will be student-teaching next semester.

The ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m. in the Superior Dome. It will be broadcast live on WNMU-TV Public TV 13 regionally and streamed live in high definition online free of charge through the America One/B2 networks. To see the ceremony, follow the link at www.nmu.edu/commencement.
