Trumpeter Chase Sanborn Headlines NMU Jazz Fest

Trumpeter Chase Sanborn, an alumnus of Berklee College of Music in Boston, will be the featured guest artist at the Northern Michigan University Jazz Festival. He will perform the closing concert with the NMU Jazz Band and Jazz Combo at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 7 in Kaufman Auditorium. Tickets are $6 for NMU students, $8 for other students and $12 for the general public. They are available at NMU EZ Ticket outlets.

The NMU Jazz Festival will open with a free concert featuring The NMU Dixieland All-Stars and the Republic-Michigamme School Jazz Band at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 6, in Reynolds Recital Hall at NMU. Regional high school and middle school jazz bands will participate in clinics and performances from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday. Sanborn will also lead guest artist clinics from 11-11:50 a.m. and 4-4:50 p.m. in Reynolds Recital Hall.

Sanborn, currently based in Canada, is a veteran session musician and a mainstay of the music scene in Toronto. He has toured or performed with Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Diana Krall and many other jazz and pop artists. Sanborn is a member of the jazz faculty at the University of Toronto and travels frequently to appear as clinician and guest artist. His instructional books, CDs and DVDs have garnered universal praise for their insightful and entertaining approach to playing and teaching music.
