Wright Receives AAUW Award

Friday 21, 2017

Northern Michigan University information systems student Mattie Wright recently won the 2017 Martha Griffiths Award from the Marquette Branch of the American Association of University Women. The Tecumseh native received $250, a certificate and a recognition dinner.

Wright currently works at the YMCA of Marquette County. She donates a portion of her checks to its Annual Campaign, which helps community members in financial need receive discounted rates toward YMCA memberships and programs. Wright is an intern for Marquette Area Public Schools, where she helps faculty, teachers and students solve technology problems.

Following graduation, Wright will begin working for Ford Motor Company in cyber security. Her three-year rotational job includes mobile security, penetration testing of computer systems and vehicle security.

“I would like to thank Professor Jim Marquardson,” said Wright. “He has been an excellent mentor throughout my undergrad by not only teaching me technical skills but also how they pertain to the industry. I am excited to begin my career in cyber security and follow in the path of Martha Griffiths as well as past award recipients.”

The Martha Griffiths Award annually goes to a high-achieving graduating female senior. It is named in honor of Martha Griffiths, who was known for her efforts in the Civil Rights Act and for getting the Equal Rights Amendment to the House of Representatives for a vote in 1970.
