Speaker Addresses Women and Girls in Media

Tuesday 7, 2017

Jennifer Siebel Newsom, founder and CEO of The Representation Project, will present “Women and Girls in the Media: If You Can See It, You Can Be It.” The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, in 1100 Jamrich Hall. Admission is free for Northern Michigan University students with ID and $2 for the public.

Newsom is a filmmaker, advocate and thought leader. She wrote, directed and produced the 2011 award-winning documentary Miss Representation. As a result of its impact, she launched The Representation Project, a nonprofit organization that uses film and media as a catalyst for cultural transformation. It inpires individuals and communities to challenge and overcome limiting stereotypes so that everyone can fulfill their human potential.

Her second film as a director, The Mask You Live In, explores how America’s narrow definition of masculinity is harming boys, men and society. She is also the executive producer of two documentaries: The Invisible War, about sexual assault in the military; and The Hunting Ground, about sexual assault on college campuses.

This event is sponsored by Platform Personalities and the student activity fee.
