NMU Alumnus Teacher Recounts Parkland Shooting

When NMU alumnus Ernest Rospierski (BS 2005) heard the fire alarm at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., he assumed it was a previously discussed “code red” drill. As students filed out of his classroom, he heard gunfire. A bullet grazed his cheek, but Rospierski managed to push his students toward the stairway so they could escape. He hid in a bathroom, where his thoughts turned to his wife and fellow NMU graduate Andrea Kowalski-Rospierski (BA 2005), who also teaches at the school and was in another building across campus.
