NMU Quiz Bowl Tops Michigan Tech

Monday 26, 2018

Northern Michigan University and Michigan Tech squared off again last weekend—not on the ice, but at the U.P. Quiz Bowl Showdown. Each school fielded three teams for the tournament. NMU's A team brought its A game, earning champion honors and retaining the Superior Cup rivalry trophy with a 7-3 record.

Members of the winning team were: Kendall Plapp, Emily Burghardt, Paul LaPlant and Andrew Semak. NMU's B team tied for second with MTU's C team, with identical 6-4 records.

"It was a nice final tournament for our seniors," Plapp said. "This was different than anything we'd done before. Instead of featuring NAQT [National Academic Quiz Tournament] questions, it followed the ACF [Academic Competition Federation] format, so there was more emphasis on the humanities and literature. We're typically used to science and math with a little humanities mixed in. Despite the change, it went very well for us."

Michael Joy, NMU Quiz Bowl adviser and professor, added, "This was our fourth tournament of the year and we've had two firsts and a second place. The
team really is a great representative of NMU, and it continues to thrive."
