Guest Saxophonist Performs at NMU
Leading concert saxophonist John Sampen will perform as part of the Northern Michigan University Music Department’s Guest Artist Series at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 9, in Reynolds Recital Hall. His concert will be preceded by another saxophone performance, as student Logan Galindo will present his senior recital at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 8. Both events are free and will be held in NMU’s Reynolds Recital Hall.
Sampen is a leading concert saxophonist and is a particularly distinguished artist in contemporary literature. He has commissioned more than 100 new works, including compositions by Alder, Babbitt, Bolcom and Cage. Sampen has a degree from Northwestern University and was named the Distinguished Artist Professor at Bowling Green State University. He also is the past president of the North American Saxophone Alliance.
Galindo’s Senior Recital will include music from a variety of styles and time periods. He will perform musical selections by composers including Albinoni, Pascal and Cockcroft. The recital will also include a piece originally written for a string quartet and solo oboe, transposed by Galindo to feature a saxophone quartet and solo soprano saxophone. The concert features Nancy Zimmerman on piano.
