About the Department of Music

NMU's music degrees and ensembles not only prepare students for careers in the music industry, as professional musicians and teachers, they also welcome those who wish to enrich their lives through involvement in and enjoyment of music.

Students enjoy close working relationships with their professors, outstanding facilities, spotlight performance and conducting opportunities and unique partnerships with NMU's School of Theatre and Dance.

The department is a major contributor to the artistic and cultural enrichment of the university and Upper Peninsula communities.

Our Main Stage

The 300-seat Reynolds Recital Hall is one of the premiere performance venues in the state of Michigan. Architecturally and acoustically,  the hall provides an unparalleled musical experience for both listeners and performers. It houses two Steinway grand pianos and a three-manual Walker digital organ with 77 equivalent pipe ranks. It is used for all departmental recitals and concert performances and is easily accessible to the department's teaching and rehearsal facilities.

Our Team

Our talented faculty are not only excellent instructors, they are musicians with a wealth of professional experience. They have been nominated for a Grammy, composed original pieces performed at the Kennedy Center and by bands across the U.S., played with some of the country's premiere orchestras and music festivals and recorded dozens of albums. Their main focus, though, is helping our students explore and excel in music. Get to know us at the link below.
