Music Theory and Analysis
Igor Popovic, PhD, MPhil (Yale '92, '90), completed his doctorate in music theory with the dissertation "Common Principles in Music-Theoretical Systems" - an interdisciplinary study in the history of music theory, applied mathematics, and computational structures. Surprisingly enough, that combination of disciplines turned out to be actually useful in the world outside of academia.
After teaching music theory, analysis, and computer-generated music at West Chester University (West Chester, PA), Yale (New Haven, CT), and Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN), Popovic branched out of academia and into software development for research and industrial applications, eventually spending 25 years developing algorithms and software for the analysis of earth's "sub-surface music" - seismic data.
Popovic, who is currently Senior Web Developer at NMU Marketing & Communications, is now coming full-circle to find out what exciting and new developments have since occurred in his original research domain, music theory and analysis.
