Think Someone Used Your Information for Financial Aid?
If you received a financial aid notice, student loan information, or other communication about a college or financial aid application that you did not submit, someone may have used your personal information without your permission. This may be an attempt at identity theft to obtain financial aid in your name.
Don't ignore it. We're here to help. Here are some steps you can take:
- File a report on our website.
- If you are an NMU student or alum, contact NMU Financial Aid as soon as possible.
- Check your federal student aid information at StudentAid.gov to see if anything looks unfamiliar.
- Report suspected identity theft to the Federal Trade Commission.
- Consider placing a fraud alert or security freeze on your credit reports.
- File a police report if appropriate.
- If you find a federal student loan you did not receive, contact your loan servicer and ask about the identity theft process.
You don't need to determine whether fraud occurred before contacting us. If something doesn't look right, let us know.
