Sarah Lee

Assistant Professor of Technology and Occupational Sciences

Sarah Lee is a multifaceted scientist and educator whose passion for plant biology and biotechnology has propelled her into diverse roles spanning academia and industry. With a solid foundation in biology and chemistry, Sarah's academic journey began at the University of Utah, where she earned dual Bachelor of Science degrees with emphasis in Environmental and Organismal Biology, as well as Biology with a focus on Chemistry.

Sarah's pursuit of knowledge led her to Michigan State University, where she obtained her Master of Science degree in Plant Breeding, Genetics, and Biotechnology. During her time at MSU, she delved deep into research on the use of CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing to generate unique diploid potato knockouts, contributing an academic publication and valuable diploid potato lines to the potato breeding program at MSU.

In addition to her research endeavors, Sarah served as a teaching assistant for various courses, where she not only facilitated learning but also created engaging course content. Her role as a Course Content Creator at Michigan State University allowed her to develop online educational materials for a new online Global Plant Breeding Master’s program at MSU. Sarah's journey in academia transitioned into the realm of cannabis industry, where she assumed the role of Cultivation Captain at a large-scale cannabis facility. In this capacity, she oversaw the cultivation of thousands of cannabis plants, implementing lean principles and scientific methodologies to optimize plant care and production processes. Her expertise in plant science, combined with her proficiency in statistical analysis and experimental design, enabled her to spearhead projects aimed at enhancing crop yields and efficiency.

Currently, Sarah enjoys serving as an Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator at Northern Michigan University, where she loves promoting the learning and careers of students and is instrumental in developing and expanding the Cannabis Operations and Plant-Based Wellness program.
