Acknowledgement: Per sponsor requirements, NMU submitted the Department the Certification and Agreement and the assurance that the institution commits to use no less than 50 percent of the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students. Total amount distributed: As of 3/31/2021, NMU had distributed to students, under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act a total of $2,997,309.
Total number of students eligible: The estimated total number of students at Northern Michigan university eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and thus eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants under Section 18004(a)(1) is 6,589 students.
Total number of students served: As of 3/31/2021, NMU had distributed Emergency Financial Aid Grant support, under Section 18004(a)(1) of the Cares Act, to a total of 6,015 students.
Methods: The methods used by NMU to determine student recipients of Emergency Financial Aid Grants, and the amount they received, under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act:
1) Grants to students in the Winter 2020 semester were based on internal applications up to $700 per student applicant to cover federally approved COVID-related expenses, such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child-care expenses.
2) Block grants to students in the amount of $115 and $31.26 were awarded on 9/14/2020 and 2/23/2021, respectively based on Fall 2020 semester enrollment to all eligible students. The amounts were based on allocating the remaining CARES Act funding to all of the students who were estimated to be eligible and is meant to assist students towards COVID-related expenses, such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child-care expenses.
3) Final unexpended funds were awarded based on a student’s request

Northern Michigan University is accepting applications for emergency grant funds approved through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) monies, which are part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act. These grants are meant to cover expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to the COVID-19 crisis. Some examples include food, housing, course materials, technology, health care and childcare.
Students are invited to apply for these grants, up to a maximum of $700. Students who recently received grant support through their application to Wildcat 2020 Student Relief Fund are eligible to re-apply here, but any grant approved through the Wildcat 2020 Student Relief Fund will be taken into consideration when determining your final award.
Eligibility requirements: (established by the U.S. Department of Education):
- Student must be enrolled in the Winter 2020 semester.
- Students enrolled solely in online programs through Global Campus are not eligible for this funding.
- Students must be eligible to receive Federal Title IV financial aid programs (Pell Grant, Direct Loans, Federal Work-Study). The criteria for Title IV program eligibility include, but are not limited to:
- Must be admitted into eligible degree or certificate program.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident.
- Must be meeting NMU's Satisfactory Academic Progress standards. (Full policy can be reviewed at www.nmu.edu/finaidsap)
- Cannot be currently in default on prior federal student loans.
- Male students (18 years and older) must be registered with Selective Service.
- Students who have not yet filed either a 2019-20 or 2020-21 FAFSA must complete one in order to determine eligibility. The FAFSA can be filed at www.fafsa.gov.
Applications will be considered through May 25, 2020, or until the funds have been exhausted.
Submission of this application does not guarantee grant funds. The amount of the award will be based on eligibility, the amount requested, and available funding. The Financial Aid Office will notify students of their grant awards through their NMU email address.
If you are awarded an emergency grant, the funds will automatically be sent to you using direct deposit or a check to the permanent address you have listed in your NMU record. The emergency grants will not be automatically applied toward any outstanding charges on your student account. Direct deposit is the quickest way to receive these funds, once awarded. To sign up for direct deposit (ACH) to your bank account, log into mynmu.nmu.edu, go to eBill, and click on the Refunds tab. Select "Set up Account" to enter your banking information or select a current account already saved.
