Acknowledgement: Per sponsor requirements, NMU submitted the Department the Certification and Agreement and the assurance that the institution commits to use no less than 50 percent of the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students. This certification was submitted April 19, 2020. Per sponsor requirements, “for existing private nonprofit and public CARES Act grantees, the CRRSAA authorized supplemental awards to existing Student Aid Portion and Institutional Portion grantees. These institutions will not be required to submit new or revised applications to the Department to receive these new funds.” Therefore, no new certification was completed for the HEERF II (CRRSA) or HEERF III (ARP) funding to use the funds received under Section 314(a)(1) of the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2021 (CRRSAA) and ARP (a)(1) from the American Rescue Plan to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.
Total amount received: NMU qualified for and received funds from the Department pursuant to the institution’s Certification and Agreement for Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students $14,734,965 (in student-targeted funding from combined CARES, CRRSA & ARP).
Total amount distributed: For quarter ending December 31, 2021, NMU had distributed to students, under Section 314(a)(1) of the CRRSAA and ARP (a)(1) a total of $1,450,300.
Total number of students eligible: The estimated total number of students at Northern Michigan university eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants under Section 314(a)(1) and ARP (a)(1) is 9,311.
Total number of students served: For quarter ending December 31, 2021, NMU had distributed Emergency Financial Aid Grant support, under Section 314(a)(1) and ARP (a)(1), to a total of 1,967 students.
Methods: In additional to student individual requests, NMU processed Student Emergency Grants using the HEERF II and HEERF III funding.
Winter 2021 semester: The method(s) used by NMU to determine student recipients of Emergency Financial Aid Grants, and the amount they received, CRRSA Section 314(a)(1) and was created by NMU as a model of a new internal application for “HEERF II Emergency Grant” established by the NMU. That fund distributed funds to students in need and expired April 12, 2021, but was subsequently extended and remained open through September 13, 2021. The application for HEERF II Emergency Grant funds is available to students here.
Fall 2021 semester: The method(s) used by NMU to determine student recipients of Emergency Financial Aid Grants, and the amount they receive(d), CRRSA Section 314(a)(1) and ARP (a)(1) was created by NMU as a model of a new internal application for “Fall 2021 Federal Stimulus Grant” established by the NMU. That application is currently open. The application for Fall 2021 Federal Stimulus Grant funds is available to students here.

These informational announcements were made by the NMU’s President and the Financial Aid Office for the HEERF II Emergency Grant and the Fall 2021 Federal Stimulus Grant.
