Evan Lucas

Associate Professor of Technology and Occupational Sciences

Evan Lucas is a 2011 graduate of the NMU Construction Management program. During his time as a student, he was a member of the hockey team and also worked as a skilled laborer and carpenter before pursuing more managerial roles - he is a firm believer that students should learn how the industry works from the ground up so they can make better decisions once they earn leadership roles. Upon graduation, Evan accepted a job as a Project Engineer with the Whiting-Turner Contracting Company and moved to Baltimore, MD. There, he managed a wide-range of municipality projects (waste water treatment facilities, pump stations, transfer stations, city schools, etc.), but was also fortunate to work exclusively with the Baltimore Ravens to do several prototyping projects for NFL infrastructure grant
applications.

After a few short years in Baltimore, Evan began pursuing his Master’s Degree in Public Administration, and moved back to Michigan to advance his career as a Project Manager with Rockford Construction in Grand Rapids. While with Rockford, he worked mostly in the Education market sector, but also managed several small healthcare projects. He feels very fortunate that his career as a manager led him to see such an extensive variety of project types. This has helped play a significant role in understanding how to broaden his perspectives – especially with regards to approaching problem solving. Evan was also the head hockey coach for East Grand Rapids high school for 3 years. It was through coaching that he found his passion for helping the next generation develop into young professionals.

Evan was excited to accept a position with NMU in 2017 where he could move back to his hometown, start raising his young family, and continue his family’s legacy as a faculty member at Northern. He is very enthusiastic about working with his heavily engaged faculty team to lead the charge in developing an even greater future for an already award-winning Construction Management program. He is passionate about tackling challenges head-on through creative and critical thinking, collaborating with others to help enhance his education and perspectives, and building lasting relationships – all of which he encourages through his teaching practices. Aside from his role in Construction Management, Evan was also a co-writer of the new interdisciplinary Indoor Agriculture Program at NMU, where he also serves as the program director and lead adviser. He was humbled and honored to be the recipient of the 2020 Faculty Emerging Leadership Award at NMU. He also owns a consulting firm where he assists companies with project management activities and processes.

Evan enjoys being active member of both the NMU and Marquette communities by engaging in many committees and boards (both on and off campus), coaching youth hockey, playing music, and enjoying all of the wonderful outdoor activities the Marquette (and UP) area has to offer. Although he has been an avid traveler his whole life, there’s no place in the world he would rather live and work than Marquette and NMU.
