The New Provost and Academic Vice President

Anne Dahlman, whose higher education experience spans 27 years as a teacher, faculty scholar and administrator, will become Northern Michigan University's next provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, effective April 1. The Finland native most recently served as interim associate provost at Minnesota State University Mankato, where she advanced through the faculty ranks and various leadership positions over the past 17 years.

“Northern is a special place with excellent faculty and academic programs, and I look forward to working with all campus members to offer extraordinary educational opportunities for students from all backgrounds,” Dahlman said. “Together we can do great things, and I felt this sense of community when I visited the campus. I believe that Northern can become a model of academic excellence—a North Star—for other regional universities. I'm excited to be part of this work.”

“Dr. Dahlman brings just the right mix of instructional, research and administrative experience to her role as our new provost,” said NMU President Brock Tessman. “She also stood out during our selection process because of the energy, creativity and vision she will add to Academic Affairs and our leadership team at Northern Michigan University. In short, I am thrilled to welcome Dr. Dahlman to NMU and the Upper Peninsula.”

In addition to preparing students and faculty for success, the office oversees contracts, forms, committees & councils, department bylaws and other procedures necessary to keep the university in good standing.

The Academic Affairs office at NMU strives to prepare students for a lifetime of professional and community contributions in an increasingly interdependent and culturally diverse world. We are committed to helping provide excellent teaching and student learning for the NMU community, through support resources for new faculty, handbooks and the Teaching and Learning Advisory Council.

The Academic Affairs division is strongly committed to enhancing the pursuit of scholarship by faculty and staff. We are committed to the concept of the teacher-scholar, a distinction that was emphasized by Ernest Boyer when he said that the time has come to move beyond the teaching versus scholarship debate.

With the implementation of our new strategic plan, this is a great time to be a Wildcat! With the strategic plan as our guide, we’re investing in advancing innovation in all academic programs, in improving the lives of all members of our campus community, in leveraging opportunities provided by our magnificent location in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and in engaging educationally more and more with communities beyond our campus and around the world.
