The Northern Michigan University Board of Trustees wishes to recognize and honor full-time faculty, including academic department heads, who have made significant professional contributions to Northern Michigan University and their professional areas.

One faculty member/department head may be selected.  Those who have previously received this award are not eligible for another. 

The screening committee is comprised of the Academic Deans and the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.  The Committee will base its decisions on the nominee’s record of significant contributions to NMU and to his/her professional discipline (as documented in the nomination materials) in all three of the following areas:

1.   teaching or other assigned responsibilities

2.   research, scholarship, creative activities

3.   university or professionally-related community service

AAUP tenured faculty and NMUFA continuing faculty with seven or more years experience at NMU are eligible for this award.

NOMINATIONS MAY BE SUBMITTED BY ANY UNIVERSITY COLLEAGUE, STUDENT, OR MEMBER OF THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE. Copies of successful award nomination applications are on file in the Office of the Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs and it is recommended that those submitting nominations review these successful applications by contacting Claudia Mankee at cmankee@nmu.edu or 227-2922.

The complete nomination package will consist of:

1) a copy of the nominee’s current curriculum vitae;

2) a narrative describing the nominee’s achievements in the three areas named above; and

3) no more than three supporting letter(s).

The deadline for nomination is Wednesday, February 3, 2025.

The Distinguished Faculty Award is announced in March and recognized at Spring Commencement. A monetary award of $2,500 (net after tax) is also provided.
