Purpose

To recognize distinguished performance and service in furthering the strategic outcomes of the university as laid out in Our Compass while demonstrating university core values of Community, Opportunity, Rigor, Environment, Inclusion, Connections, Innovation, and/or Wellbeing. 


Eligibility

Faculty or department heads who are tenure/tenure track or continuing status and have been members of the Northern Michigan University faculty for at least five (5) years at the time of the award. Prior recipients may be nominated five (5) years after receiving this award.


Criteria

The submissions will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Sustained record of performance
  • Demonstrated impact of the depth, reach, and innovation of the nominee’s contributions, including the demonstrated outcomes of their work
  • Impact and outcomes connected to strategies in Our Compass and core value/s (one or more)

Nominations

Any peer, department head/director, unit evaluation committee, or student may nominate an eligible faculty member. The nomination must be submitted to Claudia Mankee in the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Student Success at cmankee@nmu.edu.  The following items should be included in this order in one PDF document:

 

  1. Letter of nomination from peer, department head/director, unit evaluation committee, or student. Limit to 2 pages.
  2. Narrative from the nominee that includes their accomplishments related to the criteria described above. Limit to 3 pages.
  3. Curriculum vitae. Limit to 5 pages.
  4. Letters of support. Limit to 3 letters.

Deadline

Completed nomination with all supporting documentation must be submitted 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 15, 2025. 


Selection

All nominations will be reviewed by a Selection Advisory Committee chaired by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Student Success and composed of the Academic Deans, the Senior Associate Provost, a past recipient of the award, and a representative from the Office of Opportunity, Empowerment & People.


Recognition

Recipients of the Faculty Excellence-in-Service Award will be recognized at the Celebration of Excellence in Teaching and Scholarship. Up to two recipients annually will receive a cash award of $1,000.
