Current College of Business Fundraising Initiatives

The Superior Fund - Student Managed Investment Fund

We are excited to announce the creation of The Superior Fund, a student managed investment fund. Students at the College of Business will have a hands-on, real world learning experience in actively managing the investment of actual monies in equities, bonds, and other financial instruments and which will powerfully complement classroom learning.

Financial Trading Lab

The Financial Trading Lab is now open.  Faculty and students will begin using it from the Winter 2008 semester.  The Lab is located in Room 202 of the University Center, in the heart of campus, across from the Wildcat Den.  The Lab was formally opened on December 11, 2007.  Equipped with 24 student work station and a faculty desk, the dual screen computers receive continuous feed financial data.  The construction of the Lab was made possible by support from the University and many alumni and friends of the College.  The College is seeking funds to pay for the operation and maintenance of this state of the art facility which is designed to provide students a real-world hands-on learning environment.

NMU Global Outlook Fund

The NMU Global Outlook Fund will provide support to students to go on field trips, study abroad, or participate in a domestic or foreign travel course. A national and international perspective, with it’s exposure to other cultures and ways of doing and thinking (often in sharp contrast to life in the Upper Peninsula), is an invaluable personal and professional development opportunity for students. This is especially true today when our jobs take us to distant countries and we have to work with people from other cultures.

Distinguished Speaker Series

The College is building a Fund that will cover the costs of bringing accomplished business leaders and practitioners to campus to lecture on and discuss contemporary business issues.  The series will enable our students to meet and learn from such individuals and thus powerfully complement their classroom learning.

Practitioner in the Classroom Program

Professor James Camerius, who was on the marketing faculty of the College of Business for 44 years, retired in 2007 and passed away in 2012.  During his long innings, which exceeds the period the College of Business has formally existed, thousands of students took his courses in marketing.  In honor of Professor Camerius, a fund was created that will support the bringing of guest speakers to the classroom through the “Professor Camerius Practitioner in the Classroom Program”. To contribute to this fund, please contact Mr. Michael Nelson, Development Officer at mnelson@nmu.edu or by phone at (906) 227-1152.  You can send a check/money order or make your contribution by credit card.  As is well known, Professor Camerius was a strong advocate of bringing in the world of work inside the classroom through case studies and guest lecturers.
