Paul Byrnes

Assistant Professor - Accounting

Dr. Paul Byrnes earned his Ph.D. in Accounting and Accounting Information Systems from Rutgers University in New Jersey. He also holds a Master of Accountancy degree from Michigan State University, and has undergraduate degrees in Accounting, Management, and Psychology from Lake Superior State University. Paul is a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) and brings more than a decade of practical work experience from the private sector in the areas of accounting, administration, and management.

Paul is currently an Assistant Professor of Accounting at Northern Michigan University. He has published research papers in refereed journals including Accounting Horizons, Journal of Information Systems, and the Journal of Emerging Technologies in Accounting. He has also published several research papers through the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). His primary research interests entail automation of functions within the accounting and auditing domains to enhance productivity, application and development of machine learning technologies to assist with data analytics challenges, and incorporation of the REA framework in addressing database design issues.
