Northern Michigan University’s Financial Aid Office is dedicated to helping students navigate the financial aid process and advising students of other available financial resources to ensure appropriate funding. Financial aid opportunities differ between on-campus and online programs. Students are encouraged to communicate with the Financial Aid Office throughout their college experience.
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
The FAFSA is available beginning October 1st each year and can be completed online. You must reapply each year.
For maximum aid consideration and to help ensure your aid is in place by the time tuition is due, please file your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) annually by March 1.

Link your tax return information using the Data Retrieval Tool found in the “Income Information” sections of the FAFSA.
FSA ID
We strongly recommend you create an FSA ID, a username and password combination that allows you to sign your FAFSA® form electronically. Your FSA ID also can be used to access the myStudentAid app and access certain information online. While you can get your FSA ID as you’re completing the FAFSA form online, getting it ahead of time and using it to begin your FAFSA form on fafsa.gov or on the myStudentAid mobile app cuts down on errors and delays. Selected for Verification?
Instructions for three options on the IRS Data Retrieval Tool and Requesting your IRS Tax Return Transcript can be viewed and printed online.
Amended Tax Return Filers
If you are selected for verification and filed an amended tax return, extra documents are required.
Victims of Identity Theft
Victims can find information on getting an alternate paper tax return transcript online.
Financial Aid Offers
All new eligible students will begin receiving financial aid offers in the mail as early as mid-December. Additional information on the financial aid notification process for new and continuing students is available.

Maintain Financial Aid Eligibility
Federal law requires all students who receive financial aid to make Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) toward their degree. Students at NMU must meet all of the SAP requirements.
