The discovery that the dissociative anesthetic and psychedelic drug ketamine produces rapid and sustained reductions in depression opened an entirely new perspective on psychopharmacological strategies for novel antidepressant drugs. Many psychedelic drugs, including LSD, psilocybin and ayahuasca (DMT), have been examined preclinically and clinically for treating depression. This presentation will explore the underlying mechanisms that might account for the antidepressant effects of psychedelic drugs for treating depression and also about the real and potential problems with using these drugs for therapeutic treatment.
