The opioid receptor system has shown promise as a target for novel antidepressant drugs and treatments for cocaine addiction; however, the stigma associate with opioid drugs and opioid addiction has limited the clinical utility of these compounds. This lecture will differentiate the four opioid receptors and provide evidence of how we can target some opioid receptors for the treatment of depression and cocaine addiction with minimal abuse liability concerns.
