Grand Rapids-based retailer Meijer has donated two reconditioned semi-trucks and trailers valued at about $100,000 to Northern Michigan University’s new CDL Truck Driving Program. Students who complete the intensive course should be ready to test for a Commercial Driver’s License and begin their careers in five weeks. The first session begins May 21 at NMU’s Jacobetti Complex.

Northern Michigan University will host its spring commencement at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 5, in the Superior Dome. Of the 912 students eligible to graduate in May, 706 will participate in the ceremony. An additional 119 August graduates will also march, raising the total number of participants to 825. The ceremony can be viewed live on WNMU-TV 13 or online at nmu.edu/commencement.

Five Northern Michigan University students were selected for Lundin Honors Summer Research Fellowships. The students will each receive $5,000 to cover tuition costs and living expenses during Summer 2018. Each student research project will be conducted under the supervision of a faculty mentor.

Northern Michigan University’s DeVos Art Museum is partnering with community organizations on two arts-related events that benefit people with Alzheimer’s and/or dementia. An arts therapy training session led by a nationally recognized expert will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at the DeVos Art Museum. “Art in the Moment,” a pop-up show featuring the work of individuals living with a neurodegenerative conditions, will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 11, at the Marquette Regional History Center.

Two Michigan Army National Guard helicopters—a UH-60M Black Hawk and a CH-47F Chinook—made successful landings on NMU's campus Thursday and drew area residents eager to see them up close. The aircraft were on a static display for the public on the NMU recreational fields at the corner of Wright and Lincoln Streets before current military members and cadets in NMU’s Wildcat Battalion ROTC program participated in orientation flights. As in years past, the Michigan Army National Guard conducted the visit as an aviation officer orientation and recruiting event.

Media are welcome to cover an open house for the new NMU Kinesiology and Exercise Oncology Research Laboratory at 841 Washington Street. The event is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 30. NMU's Health and Human Performance Department will lead tours of the facility and discuss research regarding exercise and cancer patients/survivors, multiple sclerosis, concussions, outdoor recreational therapy and athletic training. Visitors will also learn about some future collaborations with Advanced Orthopedics and UP Rehab related to Nordic and alpine skiing.

NMU alumnus Mylan Murphy (BA 2012, MS 2014) was featured in an "Akron Beacon Journal" article related to the innovative technology he's employing through his Akron-based digital media company, OriginTD. Murphy is reported to be one of few entrepreneurs in the area using a camera that allows the user to digitally scan an area, creating a virtual reality tour for online visitors. His entrepreneurial spirit began in middle school with a T-shirt design business. Read the full story here.

Northern Michigan University will host a black-light Zumba master class to benefit NMU’s Marquette Ending Hunger and Food Recovery Network organizations. It will be held from 7:30-9 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, in Vandament Arena at the PEIF. A PEIF pass is required for members. Non-members of the PEIF should bring canned food items to donate in lieu of a pass. All attendees are encouraged to donate canned goods.

The Michigan Army National Guard will fly two helicopters, a UH-60M Black Hawk and a CH-47F Chinook, to Northern Michigan University on Thursday, April 26. The aircraft will be on a static display for the public from 1-3 p.m. on the NMU soccer fields at the corner of Wright and Lincoln Streets. Beginning at 3 p.m., current military members and cadets in NMU’s Wildcat Battalion ROTC program will participate in orientation flights on the aircraft. If recent heavy snowfall adversely impacts the condition of the soccer fields, the alternate site will be the east side of the Berry Events Center.

After placing eighth in the 200-meter sprint kayak at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio, Kelly Allen was eager to elevate her performance. She possesses the upper-body strength required to paddle swiftly, but has no left leg function to push off the foot board and achieve maximum power on her stroke. The Kingsford native’s left femur, patella and fibula have been missing since birth and her hip is underdeveloped. NMU Professor Sarah Clarke challenged students in her advanced mechanical kinesiology course to work with Allen and her longtime prosthetist Lynn Vanwelsenaers to design a custom prosthetic device that would allow the athlete to harness energy from her left side. Allen was on campus April 16-17 for fittings and related assessments in and out of the PEIF pool.

Geoffrey Holstad, senior graphic designer at Patagonia Clothing, will visit Northern Michigan University's School of Art and Design April 25-26 to conduct a workshop and give a presentation. Holstad is a plein air graphic designer and citizen meteorologist based in Ojai, Calif. In addition to his role at Patagonia, he serves on the Environmental Media Grants Council and is the co-founder and director of Cabin-Time, a roaming creative residency to remote places.

Heideman ('94 MA) has contributed text for an original choral cantata, “The Night Psalms.” The newly commissioned work by local composer Griffin Candey will premiere as part of the Marquette Choral Society concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 28, and 3 p.m. Sunday, April 29, in Reynolds Recital Hall.

Northern Michigan University’s Forest Roberts Theatre has rescheduled its modified performance of the musical Tarzan, which is geared toward children and adults who are on the autism spectrum or have sensory issues. Inclement weather forced the cancellation of the show last weekend, but it will now be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, April 22.

NMU alumna Kristine Poole (BFA '92) is among the renowned artists serving as faculty for the seventh annual Plein Air Convention & Expo April 16-20 in Santa Fe, N.M. Her life-sized clay and bronze figurative work is represented by EVOKE Contemporary in Santa Fe. It has been shown in juried and invitational exhibits across the country and featured in a number of publications. Poole frequently collaborates on unique projects with her husband, Colin Poole, a painter and sculptor who is also on the faculty for the expo. The couple intended on securing the inheritance, resorting to murder if necessary. The trip turns into a nightmare of accidents, terrorism and civil war.

Preparations are underway for the University Center renovation, which is set to begin in May. The book store has been relocated to the Peter White Lounge and West Hall and the North Wind Office to Gries Hall to accommodate the first phase of construction. The project will include a student-centered core on the first floor, with a relocated Center for Student Enrichment, smaller bookstore and new student activity zone with a pub-style atmosphere. The second floor will feature a 12,000 square-foot ballroom/conference space and reconfigured Great Lakes Rooms.

David Nyberg will begin his new role as director of corporate engagement at Northern Michigan University on Monday, April 16. He previously served as deputy legal counsel and tribal governments liaison to Gov. Rick Snyder, and director of the governor’s northern Michigan office based in Marquette. Nyberg will serve as NMU’s primary liaison to corporations and foundations. He will help to generate resources for academic programs, secure scholarship support, develop new grant opportunities and support NMU’s community engagement efforts.

He is a former public affairs manager for Verso Corporation and also was communications and community relations manager for International Paper and Champion International, all located in Quinnesec, Mich. Pontti succeeds Dave Nyberg, who left state government to pursue a new career opportunity at NMU (see related story here).

An NMU public relations class completed an online survey of this year’s first-time freshmen and facilitated focus groups to identify the leading factors that convinced students to enroll at Northern. Based on the results and a review of research on Generation Z (born between 1995-2010), the PR research methods class proposed several marketing ideas to enhance recruiting and increase enrollment. Professor Jes Thompson presented the findings at Wednesday’s NMU Strategic Planning and Budgeting Advisory Committee meeting.

April is National Financial Literacy Month, designed to raise awareness about personal finance and the need to educate young people on related topics. Northern Michigan University’s Center for Economic Education and Entrepreneurship (CEEE) will coordinate on-campus events and is available to assist K-12 schools in coordinating educational activities. National statistics ranging from student debt load and loan default rates to lack of budgeting, saving or investing for retirement demonstrate the need for increased financial literacy. Most young adults receive little or no such education before they enter the workforce.

Los Angeles-based pianist and vocalist Aimee Nolte will be the featured guest at the Northern Michigan University Jazz Festival. She will perform in the opening concert with the NMU Jazz Festival Faculty Combo and the Ishpeming High School Jazz Band on Thursday, April 12, and in the closing concert with the NMU Jazz Band and Combo on Friday, April 13. River Valley Bank donated $5,000 to again sponsor the Hope Starts Here Challenge, an annual challenge that raises funds and awareness for the Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center (UMBTC) through competitive and leisurely events geared for all ages and skill levels. The UMBTC is a collaborative effort between Northern Michigan University, U.P. Health System-Marquette and the Superior Health Foundation. The Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center’s mission is to empower patients and families dealing with brain tumors through advocacy, research, education and treatment.

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, a Class A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers baseball team, will face the Peoria Chiefs at 1:05 p.m. The first 1,000 fans through the gate will receive a newly designed Timber Rattlers U.P. Nelly Kupper, NMU professor in French and Russian, recently published “Gaze, Memory, and Gender in Narrative from Ancient to Modern.” The book uses a cross-disciplinary approach that intersects literary scholarship with neuroscience, specifically the processing of memory in men and women.

NMU alumna Aimee Kathryn Jorjani, who earned a bachelor's degree in political science and public relations in 1999, has been appointed by the Trump administration as chair of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. She will serve the remainder of a four-year term expiring June 10, 2021. Originally from Milwaukee, Jorjani began her career in 1999 as a legislative aide to Rep. Paul Ryan (WI-1) after graduating from NMU. She later spent seven years with the Department of the Interior and held several positions, including special assistant for historic preservation. She received a master's in historic preservation in 2012 from Goucher College.

Bill Rademacher, who played in the NFL before becoming head football coach at NMU, has died. He was 75. Rademacher coached the Wildcats from 1978-82, posting a record of 37-16. He was an assistant on staff prior to that, including the 1975 season, when Northern won the Division II national championship. Rademacher played wide receiver and defensive back at Menominee High School, NMU (1960-63) and professionally with the New York Jets and Boston Patriots. He was a member of the Super Bowl III-winning Jets. Rademacher was inducted into the NMU and U.P. Sports Hall of Fames. To see the "Detroit News" story announcing his death, click here.

The "Turn Down the Lights" campaign in several campus buildings held as part of Sustainability Week March 19-24 served as more than a reminder to reduce consumption. It also resulted in measurable energy savings. Kathy Richards, director of Facilities, said the five-day demonstration saved about $700, which would equate to $36,000 per year. Also, the 5,600 kilowatthours avoided during that period equates to the electricity needed to run NMU's Heating Plant for about three days.

NMU graduate student Jacob Hall, who is pursuing a master’s degree in English, had an essay titled “We Knocked Hard” published in “The Forge” literary magazine. The essay relays Hall’s adventures and occasional mischief with a beloved cousin, while exploring themes of growing up in poverty and without education. The magazine editor described it as beautifully structured around cars, “from the beginning, when you are taken in a car to your cousin’s house, to the end, when you are driving your mom and dying aunt to visit your cousin in jail.” To read the full essay and accompanying interview with Hall, click here.

Northern Michigan University and Michigan Tech squared off again last weekend—not on the ice, but at the U.P. Quiz Bowl Showdown. Each school fielded three teams for the tournament. NMU's A team brought its A game, earning champion honors and retaining the Superior Cup rivalry trophy with a 7-3 record.

Northern Michigan University’s College of Business will hold “The Big Pitch,” the new culminating event for its annual New Business Venture Competition for students from any academic major. This "Shark Tank"-style activity will feature four student teams pitching their business ideas to a panel of judges. NMU alumnus Kevin Bredeson (BS '97) has joined Skender Construction in Chicago as chief technology officer. He is responsible for strategic oversight and direction of Skender’s technology footprint. He infuses operations-focused technologies, including virtual design and construction and building information modeling, with emerging technologies surch as virtual reality, augmented reality and drone imaging.

Northern Michigan University alumnus Mark Pynnonen ('83 BS) has won two consecutive runner-up Project of the Year awards for signage and graphics work that his Signs Now Marquette franchise completed for Wildcat Athletics. The honored work includes large window graphics and backlit brushed-aluminum letters on the exterior of the Berry Events Center. Signs Now Marquette also completed a composite of signage and banners for various athletic facilities.

Northern Michigan University’s March 17 Wildcat Weekend open house for prospective students and their family members or guests was the largest in NMU history. Total attendance was 982, which included 430 students. Hosting such a large and important recruiting event requires significant involvement by faculty and staff members and student volunteers. More than 230 were on hand, contributing to the program’s success.

Northern Michigan University has received a $1 million commitment from an alumnus and his spouse to establish NMU’s first endowed professorship. The Mark R. and Eileen Lovell Professorship in the School of Health and Human Performance will focus on education, research and patient care related to concussions. Dr. Mark Lovell (BS ’77 Psychology) is internationally recognized for developing the ImPACT Test, the first and most scientifically validated computerized concussion evaluation system. He also serves as a neuropsychological consultant for several sports organizations.

Her visit will include a general presentation open to the public and sessions geared toward specific audiences. NMU alumnus David O’Connor (BS 1996) received the President’s Leadership Award from the Michigan Irish-American Chamber of Commerce (MIACC) at its annual gala on March 13 in Detroit. Dignitaries who attended included the mayor of County Cork, Ireland. O’Connor is founder, past president and board member of the MIACC. The chamber works to advance the business, culture, education and civic welfare of Michigan citizens of Irish descent. It is part of Irish Network USA.

She has worked for the past several years at the Law Office of Steven J. Tinti, with locations in Crystal Falls and Norway. After graduating from NMU, Goodman continued her education at Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing. She has been practicing law since 2011.

The students were honored at a banquet and had an opportunity to network with education leaders from across the state at the conference.

The two winners of Northern Michigan University's inaugural Three-Minute Thesis competition will advance to the Midwest Association of Graduate Schools' regional competition April 6 in Grand Rapids. Tianli Kilpatrick, a master's degree candidate in English, earned first place and the People's Choice Award for her presentation, titled "The Immortal Jellyfish, and Other Things That Don't Know About Love." William Brown, a biology student, finished second with "Development of Rapid HIV Diagnostic Assay Using Isothermal Amplification Coupled with Peptide Nuclear Acid and Gold Nanoparticle Colorimetric Detection."

Northern Michigan University will join the international Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) movement with its inaugural campus competition at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 15, in Mead Auditorium in West Science. Five master's degree students will be judged on their ability to effectively explain their research in only three minutes in language appropriate to a general audience. They are limited to one PowerPoint slide, but no other resources or props. The NMU winner will advance to the Midwest regional championship April 6 in Grand Rapids.

As a Northern student, Mike Picotte (BS 2001) spent much of his free time in the campus audio production labs, becoming proficient in their specialized software and equipment. Now he is realizing a major return on that investment. The Gwinn native is a senior sales engineer for Sweetwater, billed as “the world’s leading music technology and instrument retailer.” Picotte advises clients on gear purchases and designs recording studios and live venues. He also consults on complex sound systems for large tours by artists such as Carrie Underwood, Katy Perry and Justin Timberlake. In addition to his day job, Picotte has earned a stellar reputation among high-profile artists for his side passions: serving as a front-of-house engineer for concerts; and mixing/mastering records.

NMU Art and Design Professor Steven Hughes is featured in a Q&A in American Illustration and American Photography's "DART: Design Arts Daily," an email report for and about the creative community. Published since 2005, DART reaches more than 20,000 readers. Hughes teaches illustration at NMU and operates his own studio, Primary Hughes. His work has been used by "The New York Times," American Greetings, Toronto Blue Jays Care Foundation and other entities. It has also been displayed in numerous U.S. gallery exhibitions. Wildcat Ian Torchia won a national title in the men's 20-kilometer freestyle at the NCAA Skiing National Championships in Steamboat Springs. He drew bib No. 1 before the race and finished No. 1 with a time of 54 minutes, 21 seconds. The junior from Rochester, Minn., is the seventh NCAA Champion in Wildcat Nordic skiing history. Now a four-time All-American, Torchia earned his second first-team honor of the week in the victory to add to his two All-America awards earned in 2016.

Northern Michigan University took second place in the 15th annual Gift of Life Michigan Campus Challenge. Fourteen schools engaged in a friendly competition to register students as organ, tissue and eye donors. During the five-week challenge, about 1,400 individuals signed up across the state. NMU placed second in both number of students registered, with 206, and percentage of the student body registered, with 2.91.

An exhibition titled “Industrial Revolution” by NMU alumna Kathleen Conover (’83 MFA) opened March 2 at the Customs House Museum in Clarksville, Tenn. She said the series of paintings represents her interpretation of the impact of evolving worldwide technological and manufacturing industries on the United States. "Inspiration and visual references abound from my iron mining home on Lake Superior in northern Michigan, through the farming heartland to the desert Southwest, and from coast to coast,” she said. Conover is the latest talented female artist featured by Customs House Museum during Women’s History Month. The exhibit runs through May 2.

NMU alumna Sara Ferguson (BS 2008) has been hired by Great North Bank as financial controller for its banks, according to a press release. She is a Certified Public Accountant with more than 10 years' experience at top-ranked firm KPMG in Minneapolis and at Anderson, Tackman & Company PLC in Iron Mountain. Ferguson's management roles have included auditing, consulting and taxation. She holds a degree in accounting and corporate finance from NMU.Great North Bank was established in 1891. It is a family-owned, independent community bank serving Wisconsin, upper Michigan and beyond.

NMU alumnus Tim Haag is the new president of State Collection Service Inc., a full-service accounts receivable management solutions provider. He will be the third generation to lead the organization when he assumes his new role on April 2. His Swedish immigrant grandfather founded State Collection Service. Haag holds a business management degree from NMU. He has been with the company since 2009, starting as a sales executive before quickly becoming director of client services. Northern Michigan University will present a feature-length documentary on the late Chinese American artist Tyrus Wong as part of its Diversity Common Reader Program. Wong overcame poverty and racism to become a renowned painter who exhibited with Picasso and Matisse, a Hollywood sketch artist and a "Disney Legend" for his groundbreaking work on the classic animated film, "Bambi." He died at age 106 in 2016. "Tyrus" will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, in room 165 of the Art and Design Building.

NMU alumna Korinne Griffith (‘16 BS) has crossed paths twice with playwright Kate Danley, both as a student and professional. They first met during NMU’s developmental workshop reading of Danley’s “Building Madness,” the 2016-17 Panowski Playwriting Award winner at NMU. Griffith graduated before the NMU production, which served as the play’s U.S. premiere. Little did Griffith know that as she approached her first post-graduation directing job, she would reconnect with Danley to produce “Building Madness” at a high school in Woodstock, Ill.

Two former NMU Nordic skiers placed first and third in their respective races Feb. 24 at the American Birkebeiner, a 50k point-to-point course from Cable to Hayward, Wis. Caitlin (Compton) Gregg (BFA 2004) claimed her record-setting fifth title in the elite women's skate race. The former Olympian and NMU Sports Hall of Famer competes for the Central Cross Country (CXC) Team, Loppet Nordic Racing and Team Gregg. The NMU Police Department on Wednesday offered its first "Winter Driving Experience" to NMU students in a parking lot with snow-covered ice behind the Superior Dome. Students were able to drive an older, out-of-service patrol vehicle through a cone-filled course. An officer riding shotgun gave tips on how to avoid or effectively confront the most common causes of winter accidents. Another session is scheduled from 3-6 p.m. today (Feb. 22). The hands-on experience complements educational programs that the department presents in the residence halls on winter driving and vehicle maintenance.

Guggemos received her master’s degree in exercise science from NMU and is co-owner of Organic Coaching. She is a full-time triathlon and running coach and competitive triathlete. Northern Michigan University English Professor Marek Haltof recently published a book titled "Screening Auschwitz: Wanda Jakubowska’s 'The Last Stage' and the Politics of Commemoration." The book examines the first narrative film to portray the infamous Nazi German concentration and extermination camp. "The Last Stage" was released in 1948 and directed by Jakubowska, an Auschwitz survivor.

Media are welcome to cover a "Winter Driving Experience" offered for the first time to NMU students by NMU Public Safety. The free course will be held from 3-6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 21-22, in parking lot #56 behind the Superior Dome. Students will be able to drive an older patrol vehicle and experience/correct the most common causes of winter driving accidents. While students are navigating the course, they will be given tips to avoid hazards and safely operate a vehicle during the demands of winter driving. NMU Public Safety contacts on site will be Ken Love and Jon Kovar. The "Winter Driving Experience" complements related educational programs provided in the residence halls by Public Safety.

The Northern Michigan University Board of Trustees today approved housing and dining rates for the 2018-19 academic year. The cost of a standard double-occupancy room in the traditional residence halls and the “gold constant meal pass” dining option will be $5,203 per semester, an increase of $164 to cover inflationary cost adjustments and maintenance needs. Double-occupancy rooms in The Woods complex with the same meal plan will be $5,595 per semester, an increase of $163.

Northern Michigan University’s Forest Roberts Theatre will present a modified performance of the musical Tarzan geared toward children and adults who are on the autism spectrum or have sensory issues. The goal is to preserve the entertainment value of the show so families can enjoy it together while also creating a supportive environment. Free admission is made possible through private donor support. FRT has partnered with the Theatre Development Fund (TDF) in New York City to produce this “Theater for All” performance, scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, April 15.

When NMU alumnus Ernest Rospierski (BS 2005) heard the fire alarm at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., he assumed it was a previously discussed “code red” drill. As students filed out of his classroom, he heard gunfire. A bullet grazed his cheek, but Rospierski managed to push his students toward the stairway so they could escape. He hid in a bathroom, where his thoughts turned to his wife and fellow NMU graduate Andrea Kowalski-Rospierski (BA 2005), who also teaches at the school and was in another building across campus. The first collaboration between Northern Michigan University’s dance minor and Arts Chorale will use artistic expression to address topical health and social issues such as suicide, homophobia and bullying. As one component of the NMU Dance Concert, 25 student vocalists under the guidance of Director of Choirs Erin Colwitz will perform alongside 14 dancers led by Dance Minor Program Director Jill Grundstrom.

Cary Nelson, former national president of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) and author of No University Is an Island: Saving Academic Freedom, will speak at Northern Michigan University. His talk is titled “Academic Freedom in Times of Crisis: The Future of Collective Bargaining, Free Speech on Campus, and Prospects for Peace in the Middle East.” The event is scheduled from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, in Reynolds Recital Hall. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) signed into law by President Donald Trump is the most sweeping tax reform the United States has seen in three decades and has a significant impact on payroll tax withholding, according to NMU Human Resources. Northern Michigan University’s Gonzo Media student organization will screen San Soleil at 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, in 165 Art & Design.  San Soleil is an experimental documentary released in 1983 by French director Chris Marker. The documentary uses footage recorded in various countries around the world and ties each segment together with music and voice-over narration of a seasoned world traveler.

Former NMU Nordic skier Eli Brown will march with the Team USA delegation during the Feb. 9 opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang. But he won’t be competing as an athlete as he once dreamed. He is a ski tech for the U.S. cross-country ski team. Brown’s role is to monitor snow conditions and test different types of wax to make sure the team has the fastest skis possible. They include an alumna on the U.S. cross-country ski team, a former NMU Olympic Training Site speedskater competing in his fifth Olympics, a former Wildcat hockey player representing Sweden, a former NMU football player competing in snowboardcross, an alumnus coaching an alpine ski racer representing Malaysia, and two former speedskaters serving in assistant coach and team leader roles. The Winter Games are being held in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Robert Mahaney of Marquette will serve as chair of the board and Steve Mitchell of West Bloomfield is vice chair. Trustees also approved standing committees, with James Haveman of Grand Haven appointed chair of the Finance Committee and Tami Seavoy of Marquette serving as chair of the Academic Affairs Committee.

Results of the NMU Employee Satisfaction Survey conducted late in the fall semester show a convincing majority of faculty and staff members have positive perceptions of their jobs and are satisfied with the support of their immediate supervisors. Most questions were replicated from the last survey in 2013 for comparative purposes, but a few were added to gauge opinions on the recently completed strategic planning process, recognition and the performance evaluation process.

Artist Julian Gaines (BA 2015), who majored in painting and drawing at NMU, was approached to transform the blue denim Air Jordan 4 Retro and a reversible denim trucker jacket to mark the launch of the Jordan X Levi’s® collaboration. By using his creative talents to customize clothing, he has carved out an impressive professional niche. Many cultural luminaries have commissioned his work and he has several other collaborations to his credit. The exhibition follows the evolution of the Aperture Foundation through a display of photographs from its print and fundraising programs made over a 50-year period. Erica Huss, who recently became the first female warden in the 128-year history of Marquette Branch Prison, is an NMU alumna. The Wakefield native graduated in 1991 with a bachelor's degree in behavioral psychology/criminal justice. She has spent 23 years with the Michigan Department of Corrections.

Northern Michigan University will host a public presentation on human trafficking as part of a week-long awareness initiative in the Upper Peninsula. The recently re-established U.P. Human Trafficking Task Force (UPHTTF) has teamed with the Department of Justice, U.S. Homeland Security Investigations, several U.P. law enforcement agencies and local experts to deliver presentations across the region. NMU alumnus Todd Maki has been appointed the new president & CEO of First Bank, Upper Michigan, effective March 1. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business management from NMU. Maki has been with the organization for 20 years and is a lead commercial lender. According to a press release from parent company First Bancshares, First Bank recently merged with Northern Michigan Bank & Trust. It has 10 locations, including two in Gladstone, where Maki resides.

NMU's Diversity Common Reader Program is a semester-long initiative focused on exposing a new cultural or ethnic idea at a campus-wide level. The program's 2018 book selection is Luis Alberto Urrea’s Nobody’s Son: Notes from an American Life. In this American Book Award winner, Urrea tells his story of growing up in San Diego as the son of a Mexican father and Anglo mother from Staten Island. The memoir describes Urrea’s childhood as a mix of opposites, a clash of cultures and languages.

Northern Michigan University students will receive free access to all of the bike, ski and snowshoe trails that comprise the Noquemanon Trail Network. They can also check out snowbikes, snowshoes and cross-country skis for use on the NTN at no charge.
